New Sheriff Bolts Tech Bulletin

Hey there, just wanted to put out a friendly reminder regarding the torque specifications of the stainless steel bolts that we utilize on our flipping amazing New Sheriff hubs.

The New Sheriff hubs currently feature stainless steel bolts, which while super classy and corrosion resistant, do come with a torque spec (33nm).

When we were designing the New Sheriff bolts we decided to go super baller and include both a 6mm hex and a 15mm wrench surface.  We thought that we were giving our customers the best of both worlds, but it has become clear that the 15mm is an invitation to crank the bejeezuz out of them, which leads to failure.  The other hub manufacturers who spec stainless hardware, Paul and Phil Wood for example, only spec a 6mm hex to fool proof them for this reason.

In the short term, we would like to educate you, our customers, on this important bit of info. The New Sheriff is an incredibly badass, great value hub and we want to make sure that it doesn’t get a bad rap from folks who have issues while improperly using it.

In the long term we plan on switching to CroMoly hardware, as we’ve come to the conclusion that having any product in the line with a torque spec that must be observed may not be the best thing for the fixed gear set and having any of these user error breakages occur isn’t great for our brand or the reputation of the New Sheriff.  For those who are into corrosion resistance we still plan on selling the stainless hardware aftermarket.

It may take anywhere from a few months to a year to sell through our remaining stock of stainless bolt equipped New Sheriffs, and I’d like to reiterate that when used correctly they are the total jim jam.  If you are particularly concerned about it only use a 6mm hex wrench when installing the hubs and you’ll have no worries.  That said, I use a 15mm box on mine all the time and have had absolutely no issues.

Thanks for reading and thanks to those of you out there who are riding the crap out of the New Sheriffs.  Remember 33nm is all you need.
