Almanzo 2013 Race Report
I'm not going to wax all poetic about the magic and unity of the Almanzo, because if you've ever done it then you already know, but I do need to give a shout out to Chris Skogen for once more putting on a truly world class event and giving it to the people for free.
As for my race, well I was slated to race the Royal 162 due to peer pressure from my incoming out of town friends, but as they began to scratch their names off the start list the pressure was lifted allowing me to ride the Hundo as my heart desired.
And damn am I glad I did, now I don't actually find the race to be "fun" in the usual sense of the word, I was happy to have done it and absolutely gave the race everything I had. I rode with the front group for the first 40 miles which were filled with a few epic chases after being shucked from the lead pack on several occasions. I've never seen the front stay together for so long, with the cause being that everyone seemed to be marking the tandem.
After that I bounced from group to group, up and down the front of the race, and absolutely drained myself to finish in 54th place with a time of 6 hours and 8 minutes. Pretty awesome time for this guy, especially since I made a crucial routing error that cost at least 10 minutes.
Here are a few photos from the day.
And then earlier this week I took the opportunity to nab some glamour shots of my dusty Space Horse. Obviously my opinion is anything but neutral, but damn was I stoked on this bike for the race. I used every gear inch of the 34 X 32 low gearing, and the low bottom bracket and raked out front end were confidence inspiring on the downhills, while the bike still sprints like a freight train.
