New Wheel, White Wheel

Recently I have been ruining rear wheels with alarming regularity.  In response to my newfound proclivity to thrash wheels I experimented with running a 36 hole 29’er mountain bike rim.  Well as you can see here, that mtb rim didn’t work out the way I was hoping.

One call to our friends at Velocity and my frown was turned completely upside down, and a new White 32 hole non machined Deep V and some Velocity white spokes were on their way to the All-City offices to hold me over until the release of the Chukker.  I’ve always wondered what our white hub on white spokes to a white Deep V would look like (the guys at Paradise Garage in Columbus have been building this wheel and piqued my curiosity a few weeks back) . 

Turns out, it looks like this.
 
And to give it even more strength, Matt from Handspun tied and soldered it.  We were concerned that the heat from the solder iron would melt the powdercoat on the spokes, but to our relief and surprise that didn’t happened.  Perhaps in less skilled hands it may be an issue, but it wasn’t for Matt.  
I’ve ridden it a few times now and it’s holding up great, and I’m now a firm believer that the height of the sidewall makes a huge impact on a rims ability to absorb side loads (spinning).

Big thanks to Velocity, and if you’ve ever wondered about what an all white combo might look like, now you know.  Although I do totally need one of those white 28c Vittoria’s to complete the look.
