Big Block
The Big Block track frameset represents our vision of the ideal track frame for the modern fixed gear rider. This is the bike that we’ve always dreamed of building and we are proud to make that dream available to you. Each size frame has been evaluated for optimum tubing butt placements, diameter, and wall thickness. Attention to detail is our mantra, and it shows in every aspect of this bike. It soaks up bumps, sprints like mad, and begs to be ridden hard. Ride it on the street or take it to the boards, the Big Block will hold up its’ end of the deal wherever you choose to ride it.
One of most exciting phases of the Big Block project was putting together the complete bike spec. Some of the choices were easy. Of course we're going to use our hubs and cranks. Others were not that simple, headset, rims, tires, etc. We feel that we've not only put together a well priced bicycle that any bike mechanic or nerd would be proud to ride as is, but that we have also righted many of the disappointments and shortcomings regarding traditional bike industry thought regarding complete bike spec.
Let's start with the cockpit: black 30mm riser bar with a comfy 9 degrees of sweep, mated to a quality four bolt alloy stem. We've spec'd a super nice Cane Creek S3 headset which will provide years of maintenance free smoothness. Traditionally the headset is one area where product managers down spec in order to save money on the complete package, the thinking being that consumers don't assign much value to a headset. This line of thinking has never sat right with us. Not only does a high quality headset provide a much nicer ride, but changing one out is a hassle requiring tools that most people don't own. In addition we've always felt that a highend headset is one of the clear indicators that a person truly appreciates quality and cares about their bike, and we hope that you'll care deeply for this one. You're also getting a matching set of front and rear brakes, the levers being hinged for easy on and off. For your sitting pleasure we've spec'd a sleek and comfy saddle, along with a Kalloy radiused top seatpost (an all-time favorite) which features a nice setback and traditional one bolt clamp design.
Moving on to the drivetrain: you'll find our own All-City 612 Track Crankset complete with 46tooth AC chainring and steel chainring bolts. The crankset is attached to our favorite square taper bottom bracket, the TH Industries 7420 featuring two steel cups (who needs plastic?), high quality bearings, and a weight savings of over 100g compared to similar square taper models. The cog in back is a 17 tooth, with All-City lockring, and the package is finished off with a silver KMC chain.
The wheelset features our own 32 hole Standard hubs (fixed/free), laced via DT Swiss Champion black spokes and DT silver brass nipples, to non-machined Alex R450s. The R450 is a 450g semi-aero rim featuring a durable triple box design. Completing the wheel package are a pair of one of our all time favorite tires, the venerable Vittoria Zaffiro in a 700X25c street friendly configuration.
In short, we've built this bike as we would want to own and ride it. It is a complete and thoughtful package with no part begging for an upgrade. But don't let the riser bars and brakes fool you, this thing has serious velodrome potential. Just swap out the bars and get after it.
Features
Traditional track geometry: This bike was built for the boards. It features the steep angles and quick handling that you'd expect from a traditional track bike. It is 100% UCI track legal and would make an excellent classic velodrome racer.
Tire clearance: Check that fork crown and subtle dimple on the chain stays, you've got all the clearance you need without the ugliness of big open spaces. Space for 32c's if you're so inclined.
Steel tubing: Steel remains the preferred material for those who appreciate ride quality. It is the benchmark that all other frame materials are compared to, and for good reason. Nothing matches it's ride, fatigue life, or affordability.
Signature Dropouts: Investment cast from stainless steel, featuring built in chain tensioners, and the timeless Hennepin Bridge icon.
